Early Life & Education
Born in 1953, Bob Baffert grew up on a ranch in Nogales, Arizona where his family raised chicken and cattle. He got his first taste of racing on a dirt track when his father bought Quarter Horses.
He also worked as a jockey in his teen years, earning $100 a day in informal Quarter Horse racing in Nogales. He quickly progressed to racing at recognized tracks, scoring his first victory at age 17 in 1970.
Baffert attended the University of Arizona’s RaceTrack Industry Program with a Bachelor of Science degree. He was soon married, and began training quarter horses at a Prescott, Arizona farm, earning a reputation as a trainer by the age of 20 and was hired by other trainers to run their stables.
Career
Having earned his first win with Flipper Star in 1979, Baffert established a reputation with less expensive horses like Silver Charm and Real Quiet, bought for $16,500 and $17,000 respectively. Some of his peers attributed his early success to an “extraordinary eye for a good horse” and his management ability in finding the right opportunities for his charges.
The American Classics was where Baffert truly made his name, beginning in 1996 when he trained a three-year-old colt named Cavonnier, who finished second in the 1997 Kentucky Derby.
The following year he trained Silver Charm to victory in the Derby, adding a win in the Preakness Stakes. He repeated the feat the following year, becoming the first trainer in history to win the Derby and Preakness in successive years.
Overall, Baffert has claimed six Kentucky Derby wins and eight victories at Preakness Stakes, the latest of which came with National Treasure in May 2023. He has also earned other American Classics wins like the Belmont Stakes and the United States Triple Crown.
Baffert has also won multiple individual awards, winning the Eclipse Award for Outstanding trainer four times. He has been inducted into the Lone Star Park Hall of Fame and the US Racing Hall of Fame.

He is an official ambassador for Jockeys and Jeans, a foundation that highlights “the dangers inherent in race riding, honour the courage of severely injured jockeys as they rebuild their suddenly changed lives, and raise funds for their ongoing support”.
Baffert’s brand endorsement does not include any sportsbook. However, Kentucky is considered a major racing destination and this makes him a big draw for betting brands.
FanDuel, Caesars and BetMGM are some of the big names launching in Kentucky. TwinSpires could also be an option as it is owned by Churchill Downs Incorporated which runs the Kentucky Derby where Baffert has enjoyed plenty of success.
